Golf has been around for ages. The most accepted fact is that it came from Scotland in the 1100s. Although it is a very popular game, it is not as popular as basketball which was just invented in the 1900s. Probably, the game is not as physical as sports are expected to be. Also, golf as a sport appeals to the upper-income class only, simply because the equipments are expensive and there are not much golf courses where everyone can play on for free. And with this income bracket of players, it is only normal that businesses involved in the sport offer several personalized items like custom golf balls, customized golf clubs, and etcetera.
Since the balls are small-no heavier than 1.620 ounces and no smaller than 1.620 inches-golf balls have become accessories, too-from key chains to bag tags to alarm clocks, to mementos and keepsakes, and so on.
The golf ball of today has undergone a metamorphosis and is much different from the golf balls used in the early thirteenth century. The original or ancient golf ball was made wood. In the 17th century, people used feathers for golf balls and the golf ball was called a featherie.
The featherie was hand sewn and was made of leather. Inside the leather are goose feathers enough to fill a top hat. The leather and feathers are then boiled so the feathers would expand and the hide would shrink during cooling. The downside of this type of golf ball was that it was not durable in all weather conditions. If it got wet, the stitches cut loose and the golf balls burst when they hit solid pr hard surfaces. However, the combination of the feather and the leather and their properties when boiled and cooled gave satisfactory ball flight characteristics to players so it lasted as the standard golf ball for more than two hundred years.
Now, the golf balls we use are made of several materials from titanium to surlyn and urythane to hybrid materials. Golf balls have several numbers of layers and each type has a name apt to how many layers it has. A single layer golf ball consists of a single core, and a two-piece has two layers, and so on. This is because each has a characteristic that will suit the needs of who ever will play the ball-amateur or professional.
Custom golf balls are very popular to golfers who want to have something personal printed on their golf balls. Other companies also order custom golf balls as giveaways during conventions or meetings of corporate executives. Some people customize theirs for the sheer pleasure of it, just about the same way you customize your car plates.
You can print practically everything-your name, company name, date, a one-liner, just about anything that you want. Custom golf balls are not recommended for play, though, because you do not know if these balls are refurbished. If they are, they will certainly affect the spin of the golf ball once hit. The big players in golf ball manufacture are brands like Titleist, Callaway, Nike Golf, Bridgestone, Ben Hogan, Dunlop, Precept, and Top Flite.
