I just got a 1990 kawasaki stand up jet ski 550. What is the black rubber plug for in front of the engine?

it looks like an oil resivour plug but has no dipstick and i can not see oil in this compartment. it is removable by hand and i would like to know its purpose. Also, the ski has not been run for a year but did start right up. i checked all the obvious things such as rubber parts (for cracking) tightened hose clamps, etc. Is there anything else I should look at?

Please do not put oil in there. That is actually the plug where you check the timing of the engine. Usually never need to, but after certain engine repairs if you need to check it you remove that plug and use timing light. I have a 89 650 sx that I bought new so know all about that plug. If you were to dump oil in there you would ruin the pickup assembly behind the flywheel and your ignition unit Also make sure that the pull up knob, that looks like a choke on a regular engine is always closed as it is the drain valve to drain the bottom of the engine should it get water in it while diving it underwater in waves. Most folks that used to race these blocked that entire assembly off with a plate on the bottom of the engine as if that device is left open a bit the engine runs too lean and burns the pistons. I always check to make sure mine is all the way down before a day's riding. I assume the 550's have this as my 650 does, but if your's doesn't then just disregard.
